StoryVault launches with support from Al Murray and Professor Tanya Byron3rd April, 2010

StoryVault launch is being spearheaded by what at first may seem an unusual combination of personalities – the eminent psychologist Professor Tanya Byron and comedian Al Murray. However it isn’t as odd as it might seem.

In his private life, “the Pub Landlord” Al Murray, is a graduate in Modern History. He believes that StoryVault Social Network will quickly become an invaluable and regular resource for students, families and historians. “Stories of personal experience bring history to life, and every historian loves to be able to access first-hand testimony from eye-witnesses.”

“StoryVault is not only a great way to capture important memories from the family which should be kept for future generations, it’s actually contributing to our understanding of how we came to…

Internet Explorer: #1 browser for innovation, compatibility, and reliability! (And, no – I’m not being bribed to write this piece)22nd March, 2010

Please excuse the sarcastic title, but it was intended to illustrate a point – nobody loves IE. Yes, many use it – although the majority of them are either forced to by system restrictions (in workplaces for example) or simple aren’t bothered enough to switch to an alternative. Apathy and lack of alternatives are hardly a confidence boost for a company, even if it does yield almost two-thirds market share (as IE currently holds). However, does this necessarily mean that IE will always be unpopular (with vocal tech-savvy critics) and lagging behind in performance tests?

Of course it doesn’t – MS is a very rich and pretty clever company, and if the recent announcements on IE9 are anything to go by,…

A nice video of Google’s new Chrome Beta caps of a pretty good week for the big ‘G’2nd March, 2010

After the European commission decision to force Microsoft to actively offer web users a choice of different browsers (rather than simply the implicit potential to search for, download, and install one through IE), it seems Google are having a pretty decent week as far as their browser is concerned, and with rather handy timing have just launched a new beta version with some nice new features. (Head over to Youtube for a quick demonstration of the main additions and tweaks).

While the new release is nothing major (basically some added privacy controls, added control over cookies and java plug-ins for individual sites and a neat translation service),  it does come at a time when Chrome’s market share is showing continued progress at eating away at Mozilla and IE’s users (both shares of the…

Italian Youtube ruling: a storm in a teacup? or just another international PR spat for Google?24th February, 2010

Well, for those that haven’t already heard, this week has been somewhat of a historic one for Italy’s web laws – and not in a good way. This is because an Italian judge has convicted three former Google employees for invasion of privacy, after a video of students bullying an autistic classmate was uploaded to Youtube in 2006.

Google immediately co-operated with the police within hours of learning about the clip – which was then instantly removed, but nonetheless a prosecutor decided to take four former employees to court over the incident, alleging defamation and invasion of privacy. Though acquited of the first charge, three of the four defendents were found guilty of the second, and handed a six-month suspended sentence.

Now –…
