Most of us have struggled with poorly designed websites that are hard to find and slow to access; sites that lack coherent internal navigation and contain links that lead nowhere. we audit, design, develop and improve web sites

It's been a while coming but we finally have some decent info on the new EU cookie law which looks set to change the way that we'll be designing and accessing websites in the near future. In short, the law will require websites to obtain consent from users before they can make use of any cookies other than essential 'session cookies' - which means tracking, ad-serving etc cookies will require user opt-in.

However, no site re-designs are immediately required as there will be a 12-month grace period before it comes into full effect, and indeed not all European countries are currently at the same stage of adopting the law, though the UK is pretty clear on the fact that it will be in effect in a year's time.

Anyway, there's talk of browsers being expected to find a solution to all of this (meaning re-design issues will be minimal from a developers' point of view), though nonetheless there's the usual scaremongering which predicts that this will kill off EU-based start-ups by presenting a further turn-off in the user sign-up process, which US companies would not be obliged to include. (Some of these points are valid, though, since similar laws are currently planned for other non EU countries as well, the disparity might end up being quite short lived).

Regardless of what one thinks about the law, the fact is that it will soon be an essential consideration for UK-based web developers and so, with that in mind, here's an excellent resource for understanding the proposed changes from the Atrium consultancy group, covering the current state of play, likely future developments, things to consider and so on.

That's all on the subject for now, though I'm sure we'll be revisiting it again in the near future as things develop.

Happy Valentines day everybody from EtonDigital - we even got you all a present (well sort of...)

We're pleased to announce the completion of a number of great new projects, all going live in the past week or so, starting with the fantastic new AnaIvanovic.com - homepage of top tennis star Ana Ivanovic. The Drupal construction features massive social networking potential, with user profiles, facebook invite compatibility and fan groups, as well as interviews and updates from Ana and all the latest news on her career activities.

In addition to that, we've also recently unveiled RestaurantSupplier.co.uk - a directory aiming to connect restaurants and suppliers more closely, with free registration offered granting access to the full range of business tools aimed at helping businesses find the partners they're looking for.

Thirdly, freight software company BoxTop technologies has a new website at Boxtop.net with complete WordPress design, offering info on their full range of services, partners, company news, and case studies.

Last but not least is Atrium marketing consultancy - which has a brand new Drupal website at atriumgroup.com, once again, with full company info and service options for this prestigious firm (which counts Bupa, Cisco, and HM Revenue and Customs among its clients).

As always, well done to all our hard-working staff for delivering these projects to spec - and our clients who made it happen in the first place.

Dejan Levi
