Facebook continues to scoop Crunchies once again in 201022nd January, 2010

Techcrunch recently announced the results of their annual tech awards – ‘The Crunchies’, with some exciting and original new names being recognised among the more established older companies and services. Once more Facebook has done extremely well, despite some controversy over its continued classification as a ’start-up’ (it has won the award for ‘best overall start-up’ for three years running…)

Anyway click over to the original Techcrunch post for a link to watch the full ceremony live – I won’t spoil the other results for you here, apart from one which I think deserves a special mention: Spotify (which won the ‘best international’ award). A fantastic service of which I’m a big fan, and perhaps even more crucially – possibly the thing…

A couple of end-of-year lists worth a look…3rd January, 2010

As we enter a new year and a new decade, both printed and online media are delivering the usual ‘looking-back-on-the-past-year/decade’ style pieces, followed by ‘predictions-for-the-next-year/decade’ ones. Though one can sometimes get a little bored of the format, it’s worth noting that this boredom is very quickly dispelled once you come across an actual interesting and well-written list. And here are a couple of quick links to two such well-written and informative pieces…

The first is Techcrunch’s annual list of technology which blogger Michael Arrington uses everyday. The list is lengthy and extremely informative, and mercifully steers clear of the super obvious options you might expect. Get over to Techcrunch to find out more on that one.

Secondly, Endgadget has a great ‘ten…

Time running out for the humble SMS as iPhone apps steal the show?20th December, 2009

While reading a recent Techcrunch piece on Blipr (free iPhone app that enables messaging with other iPhone users), I couldn’t help but fear for the fate of the humble text message as we know it. If we can safely assume that handsets like iPhones are the future (surely in four or five years time they’ll be as everyday as colour screens on mobiles are now), then it’s only a matter of time before everyone has a mobile device with extensive app options for messaging via the internet connection of their device, rather than using more expensive SMS options.

Whatsmore, even if the cost of using the SMS format falls – it still seems unlikely that it could compete with the much cheaper cost…

Nevermind Chrome OS – check out this web tutorial on VirtualBox instead…20th November, 2009

Sorry for the cheekily dismissive title there – Google’s Chrome OS is of course a very big deal and in a year or so, when we start seeing it sold with new netbooks, there’ll no doubt be much excitement. For now though big G has generated quite a bit of early interest by releasing the open source code for all to have a little play around with…

As a Chrome fan I decided to have a tinker myself, which is how I came across this great Techcrunch step-by-step tutorial on how to set Chrome OS up on a virtual machine to test it out. I must admit this process was completely new to me, but nonetheless I managed it ok in around half…

Cool content round-up for monday morning…17th August, 2009

Here’s a few quick links to some pretty interesting articles, videos and other content which has been the pick of what i’ve come across in the past few days.

Firstly Guardian tech have compiled a viral video chart of online vids that are proving popular this week, with the help of viralvideochart.com. Follow the link for 3 choice gems, including a vid of a teenager solving a rubix cube with one hand, while acing Guitar Hero (on expert) with the other, all done backwards in a mirror – then there’s the guy who catches laptops with his butt, but i don’t wanna say anymore or i’ll spoil it for you…

After all that silliness, and in keeping with the compilation lists feel, there’s…
