A couple of weeks ago, I realised the frightening power that a well chosen computer game screenshot from a forthcoming title can have on one's wallet when I made the mistake of scanning through the promotional shots from some of this Winter's most anticipated new releases. And now, despite the fact I'm fully aware that encouraging this sort of product desire is not helpful, here's a link to another pretty exciting video gallery of one of the world's most premier gaming conventions: the Tokyo game show.

Since most gamers over in the Western world aren't likely to be in attendance, we must often make do with media coverage to check out what was on offer at this year's festival - as we Europeans must also do with the E3 convention in LA each year - which is often pretty minimal in mainstream media (it's not exactly like gaming enjoys the same cultural status here in the UK as it does in South Korea). Having said that, it's not all doom and gloom - there is the superb annual games fair in Cologne for Europeans to enjoy...

Anyway, back to TGS 2011 which, with the aid of the superb photo gallery linked above, you can get a nice idea of what attending would be like, as well as some info on what the highly-anticipated releases are likely to be next year. (N.B. If you fancy a read as well there is also some excellent english-language blog coverage over at Mikatan's blog and also Guardian tech, as well as some general info at the official event homepage).

Great news for the gamers of Brazil - they can now get their hands on a Playstation 2 for just £280, and they only had to wait 9 years longer than most of Sony's primary gaming markets to get it. How exciting! Either that, or the gamers of Brazil will laugh wildly at the absurdity of this ploy (I somehow suspect that they know that something called a PS3 actually now exists... and that even that costs less in most territories its available than Sony want for the PS2) and continue getting what they want via less direct means (otherwise known as the internet, or 'unofficial imports').

I personally am a little disappointed with the contempt for Brazilian gamers that Sony seemingly harbours - why rip them off with such a move as this? (I should state that I am otherwise quite a Sony fan with my gadget choice usually). Here's a few stats on the UK market for Playstations:

Cost of 120Gb PS3 in UK: £245

Cost of PS2 in UK: approx £50

Yes that's right - in the UK we could buy a PS2 AND still have enough left over for a PS3 (roughly) with the amount of cash Sony want for the PS2 in Brazil. Pure comedy... hence i've written a step by step guide for Brazilian gamers who want to save money:

1. Make friends with a UK gamer on Facebook, Myspace, Bebo or whatever
2. Ask your new friend to buy you a PS2 off Amazon for £50
3. Next, get them to post it to you in Brazil as a gift.
4. Buy an Xbox with the money you have left over just to teach Sony a lesson for attempting this hairbrained ploy...

Seriously, what can we expect next? Maybe in another few years Sony will re-launch the original Playstation in the UK for £499 if we're lucky...
