Possible problems of freelancers: What to do while on break to get those machines back on track?

Are you having a bad day at work, that is, at home? Do you need a break?

You could (take a walk to the kitchen and make yourself a cup of coffee or tea) take a break because as a freelancer, you can always do that, whenever you want.

Stop thinking about your deadlines, how tired you are, or how to concentrate.

Below is the list of interesting, cool and informative websites you can visit to change your usual working routine.

If you are not a peace-and-quiet-working-type-of-person you should probably start with Coffitivity. Those who have recently left their office jobs and started freelancing in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere (well, peaceful and quiet if you live alone) where in this peaceful atmosphere they are struggling to trigger creativity, should go to a coffee shop full of customers. With Coffitivity you can experience that loops of noise (different versions for the morning, lunchtime and even for university shops). Set your background music at 60% volume and recreate an environment that will keep you focused and productive.

Take the coffee shop vibes right into your room

If you are new (and old, but you need a break) to this world, and you have started to see patterns of not-so-working-atmosphere-behavior with sudden mood changes, anxiety attacks, and nervous bursts at those who are not responsible for your lack of creativity or inspiration, you need to start doing something else, anything else. “Something else” should be fun, and informative, and if you do not know where to go, you can start with Mentalfloss.  This is a world of random, odd, interesting, and amazing facts: How Many Words Do Eskimos Really Have for Snow?

Alert: be careful, because once you are there, time stops.

To get those grey cells working again (in terms of inspiration), you can also visit Boing Boing, to see what’s cool and geeky, or The Mary Sue, for more geek culture and insights into world of sci-fi, fantasy and superheroes (alert: it is sometimes so obviously from a feminist perspective, just to let you know).

And if you need deeper insight into science fiction world, visit Stack exchange and find out Why Can’t R2-D2 Talk? Or, how to explain to a 6-year-old why people on the other side of the Earth don’t fall off?

If you are a news junky, you need to see Medium and Now This News. Medium is a platform where anyone can find interesting things to read, and in turn, find inspiration, and where anyone can share something important. Here you can read best stories of your interests.

As for Now This News, it is mostly video news network with 50 video updates a day that will get you quickly informed. It is very convenient if you want to take a break from your working space, for instance, and get enough headline information while resting on your bed.  Another great website for news junkies interested in tech, media and politics is Kernel. It is where you go to see Is it OK to laugh at Hitler Now?  (Mein Kampf is high on e-book charts).

Just for fun

First, visit a project behind Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Funny or Die. If funny, the comedy videos that are usually featuring Hollywood elite (if you are into Hollywood) will “stay”, if not, and you vote “die”, it goes in history. If you want to see what happens in a car with some famous comedians, visit Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

If you happen to find yourself in a wonderland and start wondering about…well, whatever, go to Wonder How To. It is both interesting and fun.

To learn something new, and if you are a fan of charts, see Hilary Sargent’s ChartGirl. These charts are summing up some very entertaining and informative stuff in black-and-white iconographic, so don’t expect easily digestive information.

These are just cool sites you can visit and enjoy.

If into photography, visit Funofart, if into contemporary art, visit Art21, if for adventure, visit Adventure Journal, and if you want to see what was at a specific location in a certain point in history, visit Whatwashere.

Don’t miss The Oatmeal, a place where you can find the funniest comics online, and a website about comedy Splitsider.
